ADW: Myotis: CLASSIFICATION - Animal Diversity Web.
Myositis ossificans refers to the formation of bone within a muscle. It most commonly occurs in the quadriceps muscle (the group of muscles on the front of the thigh) following a dead leg. It is generally thought that myositis ossificans is caused by returning to normal activity too soon after suffering a severe bruising injury to a muscle.
Stories should not be too long. If it is over 600 words, editors might need to shorten it. Stories should clearly connect to myositis and your experience with it. Submit your story in the text box. Autoimmune myositis is characterized by inflammatory and degenerative changes in the muscles (polymyositis) or in the skin and muscles (dermatomyositis). Manifestations include symmetric weakness, occasionally tenderness, and fibrous replacement of muscle, sometimes with atrophy, principally of the proximal limb girdle muscles.
Myositis is another name for this type of condition. Patients suffering from myositis generally complain of weakness in muscles, severe fatigue and progressive loss of the ability to perform regular movements and activities such as climbing stairs, walking or lifting. This may be accompanied by pain.
Diagnosis of myositis will be made by our team of doctors, after reviewing your testing results and evaluating you at the Myositis Center. In order to make a definite diagnosis of myositis, the following criteria must be met.
Myositis ossificans is a condition stemming from an injury that can occur in many types of sports. In this condition, bone tissue forms within a muscle. When a bruise (contusion), repetitive trauma, or strain occurs to a muscle, myositis ossificans can develop. However, myositis ossificans only occurs in 9-17% of muscle bruises.
